The gine or genetta genetta in European is a feral animal that inhabits the entire Iberian Peninsula and in the southern half of France. There is a theory that the ginads that populate our lands come from Africa, and were introduced by the Saracens in the eighth century, as domestic animals.Another (more modern) theory states that the Romans had ginnets in their homes to keep them free of mice.
Roman ginets came from Egypt although they also had domesticated gints in Constantinople. They are tremendously predatory animals, great hunters of rats, mice and snakes.
Origin
Wild ginetas originally have two origins: Africa and Asia. From there they have colonized other places, basically due to the intervention of man.
It was common the presence of ginetas on the Phoenician ships and ships of later cultures .Obviously, by the success in antiquity and some documents that prove it, the gin can be tamed ; however, it can hardly be considered a pet to use if one is adopted.
Physical appearance
The gineta, Genetta Genetta, is of a size similar to a cat, but more slender and elongated. Its weight ranges from 1.2-2.5 kg.It has a conical head with developed eyes and large erect ears. Its predatory activity is performed eminently at night. The tail is as, or longer than the body and uses it as a balance to balance during jumps when hunting.
Her hair is yellow-gray and mottled with chocolate or black spots. These spots are narrow and elongated, providing excellent camouflage to the predator.
Habits
The gineta is of nocturnal habits .It is arboricola, that is, it lives in trees, where it rests. Its predatory activity mostly develops on the ground.
Its food is based on rodents, insects, lizards and eventually birds. It also consumes fruits of the forest: blackberries, blueberries, wild apples, figs, berries, etc.Obviously, if you want to adopt as a pet your food should be adjusted, following the guidelines dictated by the veterinarian as well as the advice you indicate.
Character
The ginette has a character but .Perhaps for this reason it has been displaced by the cat.if a garden is not owned, it is not advisable to adopt a gine.
Perhaps the hardness of the character of the gine, the mongoose and other Viverridos, is due to the fact that they are currently mammals most ancestral on the planet.
Behavior
The domestic gin should not be considered a traditional pet.It should be considered as a symbiotic animal , that is, it is capable of associating and living with the human being to keep its farm free of rodents, in exchange for a certain degree of extra insured food and comfortable shelter.
However, do not think of choking them if you do not want the gineta to show you in a meridian way who rules in the aforementioned society, by A painful bite. The average life of a wild gine is 10 years.A domesticated can reach 20 years.
