diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects not only humans, but also dogs.It is characterized by causing very high levels of sugar, which compromise the dog's life in the long term, so you must follow a very strict control , which can not miss insulin, basic to the process of glucose metabolism.
In this article of Animals and Pets Online we will explain everything about the cure of type 1 diabetes in dogs , something that the UAB of Barcelona has studied and exhibited.Read more and read more about this interesting study.
The UAB study
In a recent scientific study, completely reversed the diabetes of 5 Beagle dogs with a single injection session was achieved. The study was carried out by researchers at Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and published in the prestigious magazine Diabetes.
All the dogs used in the research were between 6 and 12 months old at the beginning of therapy gene to which they were subjected. The therapy consisted of introducing vectors (harmless viruses) in the muscle cells of dogs, to allow the expression of insulin and glucokinase in them.
The 2 enzymes produced in the muscles act as a "sensor" of glucose, allowing it to enter the cells of the body and regulating its concentration in the blood. Thus, gene therapy would have allowed muscle cells to replace the function of damaged cells of the pancreas of dogs.
The results
The result was very encouraging , since 4 years after the injection session, the "diabetic" beagles continued to regulate the blood sugar level. They had no episodes of hyperglycemia when eating, nor episodes of hypoglycemia when exercising.Their bodies were able to regulate glucose perfectly without the need for insulin injections or special diets.
Although the results of the team Catalan scientists are very impressive and encouraging, it is still an experimental cure .These results should still be taken with caution because the dogs used in the experiment suffered from chemically induced diabetes to simulate diabetes type 1 of humans, since the latter does not occur naturally in dogs.
Therefore, the genetic therapy used cannot be transferred directly to dogs that have natural or human diabetes. However, possibly It is a first stage to achieve a cure for diabetes.
Future studies are planned to be able to implement this type of genetic therapy in dogs that have natural diabetes, as well as in other companion animals.studies would allow us to think about the adaptation of this type of therapy to humans in the future.
